Aerobatics Through a Total Solar Eclipse August 21, 2017! This flight video depicts what the total solar eclipse looked like from an aircraft performing aerobatics throughout the event. I thought this would be a great way to experience the eclipse with my son, but I really had no idea what to expect. I really didn’t know how dark it would get and what else might affect the flight and the viewing. I was ultimately very surprised by how dark it did get and how impactful the event turned out to be. Various camera angles were used to highlight the spectacular view. A lot of preplanning was necessary to make certain the aircraft was positioned exactly as needed along the line of the eclipse for maximum effect. It was necessary to have several backup locations established on the day of the eclipse in order to avoid cloud cover. Special easily removable/changeable flight goggles were fashioned to allow for direct viewing of the sun as the eclipse was approaching, and removal of eye shading as the sun was completely eclipsed. The aerobatic maneuvers flown were especially challenging during the eclipse because of the high angle of the sun and the maneuvers required to get the sun/moon into the view of the camera. Additionally, the lack of visual references as the sun was eclipsed made flying aerobatics very challenging; there were almost no ground or sky references available once it became totally dark. The video actually picks up a lot of light that our eyes were not seeing—it was very dark. I will say that it was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen or experienced. It was a completely surreal feeling in the aircraft when the sun was totally eclipsed and darkness fell completely upon us.
